Before we get into today's video, I wanted to invite you to join the Training Scale Masterclass! Inside this program, I am going to teach you a simple framework that you can use to train your horse from any level to any level, step by step. When you know how to use the Training Scale as a guide, you’ll have confidence to structure your rides so that you can make progress each session and confidently handle any roadblocks you reach on the way.
Plus, when you join today, June 26th, by 9pm, you get a special gift pack to help give you that extra boost. This pack includes my Rider Position Ebook, an all-new Half-Halts Demo, and my Rider Fitness Package! You don't want to miss out on this!
And now for today's video....
Do you struggle to get your horse round and connected? Does your horse turn into a giraffe in every transition? If this is you, don’t worry, you’re not alone! Connection is something every rider struggles with. It’s one of the hardest things to feel and figure out. Because it’s such a common pain point for many riders, in this week’s video, I’ll be giving you a few tips to help you develop that connection with your horse.
First, it’s important to remember that while they are related, contact and connection are two different terms. When we talk about contact, that is the relationship between your elbow and the horse’s mouth, whereas connection refers to the circuit of energy from the horse’s hind leg, through the back and into your hand. When you have connection, you will be able to ride seamless transitions, develop expression in your horse’s gaits, and have harmony, balance, and control. True connection is an amazing feeling!
Okay, now on to the tips! Here are the top things to focus on to improve your connection:
Rhythm - Before you can even think about connection, it’s super important to make sure that your horse is going forward with consistent rhythm and steady tempo. The best way to check in with your rhythm is to count the beat of your horse’s gaits. Generally, if your horse is hot, you might need to slow the tempo, and if they are more laid back, you might need to increase the tempo.
Bending/Lateral Suppleness - The next thing that will really help you with your connection is getting your horse bending evenly left and right. Working on suppleness will help get your horse relaxed, soft, and straight so that they can use their bodies and become connected. Remember that the bending aids are inside leg at the girth pushing your horse into the a steady supporting outside rein, outside leg behind the girth, and inside rein for flexion.
Transitions - Riding transitions between gaits and even within gait, are a great way to work on and test your connection. Start by riding your transitions on a circle to help your horse stay supple and connected. Really focus on maintaining a consistent frame. If you can ride transitions without change in frame and rhythm then that is a sign of good connection!
Try focusing on these three things in your next ride and I know that you will see a difference in your connection!
Happy Riding!
Amelia

Thank you! You are so fantastic in your explanations, and have taught me so much ( i have so much more to learn!). I am starting my 4 year old undersaddle this year and I am starting him so differently then my other horses, bending and serpentines being a real prerequisite with a truly following contact. ( I think short reins and long arms while sitting back) so far its going really well. I also did a ton of ground work the past two years and i think that has really helped us as well. Anyhow truly-thank you :)

A very good video Amelia, thankyou! As always!! You ride so beautifully, you really do make it seems so effortless - having the correct alignment, having the balance, having the precise awareness & control of your body, & being able to feel in your horse exactly what's going on, in order to make whatever adjustments required, to fix it! And Mercurio just happens to be my favourite of your horses! He's just beautiful!!! ❤ your work! 🐎🙏

The boot camp was terrific. I practiced school figures, transitions, etc. but without focus. Now think rhythm-tempo-suppleness-contact and figure out what is wrong! Kind of a lightbulb moment, that even a novice rider can benefit from focusing on the training scale

That was really helpful to me because I had not been emphasizing the bend and was told that the change in posting diagonal was unnecessary. I prefer the change and the bend--they both make sense. I also like the addition of the 10 meter circles to get more bend at all 3 points. The drone footage makes all of this so much more visible! Thank you

I like this a lot. I have a horse that is a bit 'opinionated' and definitely tries to control the tempo. She's very forward and sensitive. I'm working on the half halts to try and keep her in the tempo, but can that also feel restrictive to the horse and cause more tension and rushing?

“I don’t believe that horses are lazy” ma’am 😭 you should come and see my horse.. he is too lazy to reach for the treat if it isn’t right in front of his face. After just 5 steps of canter he is done. His top speed is 15km/h. And most of the time no matter how many cues I give him/no matter how strong the cues are I barely get him in trot. We’ve let multiple people ride him to see if it’s with everyone and indeed just like we thought he is just too lazy to move forward cause no matter who is on him he barely goes faster than walk. + I got him this way so I didn’t ‘make’ him lazy like you said. + his previous owners who had him his whole life have also never seen him any other way. He has been lazy his entire life.

What about extremely rough and unbalanced feeling. Horse almost feels broken. Seen by vet twice, hock injected once, helped but didn’t fix. Will stumble on front as well. Have done lots and lots of transitions to get him off the forehand, has a nice trot just horrible canter. Had it decent a few years ago and now back to garbage.
